Call for Abstracts
Abstract Submission Deadline is Midnight, Pacific Time,
Monday, June 23, 2008
Deadline in other time zones: 1:00 am Mountain time, 2:00 am Central time,
3:00 am Eastern time – At this time the submission site will close and no other
submissions or edits can be made. There will be no deadline extensions.
Abstract Submission and Selection Criteria
All abstract submissions:
must be blinded – all references to the organization or the authors name must be excluded from the title, presenter information, and abstract text. Any unblinded abstracts will be disqualified.
must be complete. Any incomplete abstracts will be disqualified. Each section of the abstract submission form must have an entry.
must be in English.
must use APA format for references in the Bibliography section.
Abstract submissions may address:
Learning needs of nurses from novice to expert level of practice.
Shared best practices and evidence based practice guidelines.
Descriptions of the process of clinical inquiry, critical thinking and research as applied to specific patient care problems.
Innovative strategies used in patient care management that facilitate change and continued evolution of neuroscience nursing practice.
Opportunity for Coaching
Assistance is available if this is a first time abstract submission or if you need coaching. Before formally submitting your abstract, contact Angel Reeves, Annual Meeting Planning Committee Chair, either by phone or email (615-343-0826 or angel.reeves@vanderbilt.edu). Requests for assistance will be accepted through June 20th, 2008. *Ms. Reeves is in the central time zone.
Concurrent, Poster or Research abstract definitions:
There is an option to submit your abstract as a "Concurrent only, Poster only, or either Concurrent or Poster."
Concurrent sessions are 50 minute lecture/discussions.
Poster sessions are self explanatory, but author must be available to discuss poster at the conference.
Poster or concurrent indicates that the author would be willing to modify the content to either format.
There is an option to submit your abstract as a "Research Session".
Research presentations are a 25 minute synopsis of a formal research project.
Research presentations must describe completed work that is either knowledge generating, translational, or evidence based practice, and must describe a formal research project.
Please follow this suggested format when submitting a research abstract:
Background/Significance
Purpose of the study AND purpose of the presentation
Methodology
Results
Clinical Significance
If accepted, all abstract presenters must:
submit the proper speaker documents back to the AANN Education Manager.
register for and attend the annual conference.
assume all costs related to the annual conference, including travel, hotel accommodations, registration, and any other expenses.
be present at their designated time(s) for concurrent sessions, research sessions or poster viewing sessions.
Review and Selection:
Each abstract will be evaluated through a blinded, peer review process by members of the Annual Meeting Planning Committee and the Special Focus Groups. Research abstracts will be evaluated through a blinded, peer review process by NNF members.
Evaluation Criteria for a Concurrent or Poster Session:
The purpose of the session is clearly stated.
The title clearly reflects the abstract and is of high interest.
The abstract text reflects a topic that is cutting edge, innovative and of high interest. The abstract text defines the purpose of the presentation.
The objectives must reflect the abstract content and are measurable, clear and concise.
The bibliography is specifically targeted to the topic and is current within 5 years.
The presenter’s clinical experience is clearly stated and relevant to the topic.
The presenter’s previous speaking experience on a local, regional or national level is considered. However this should NOT discourage first time presenters.
Evaluation Criteria for a Research Session:
The title clearly reflects the project.
The problem and significance of the problem are explained.
The purpose is clear, reflects the problem and identifies the variables to be studied.
Methodology is clearly described and is appropriate for the purpose.
Results are valid and reflect both the problem and the purpose.
Clinical significance is stated.
Research has been fully completed.
Notification of abstract selection or non-selection will be made by the end of November 2008. Please be sure that the mailing address and email address provided in the submission process is correct.

Presenter Expenses:
The first listed author of a concurrent session will receive an honorarium of $100. The first listed author of a research session will receive an honorarium of $50. The first listed author of a poster presentation will receive an honorarium of $50.
Abstracts
Concurrent session (40 minutes plus 10 minutes for questions/answers) or poster abstracts: In 150 words or less, provide an accurate, succinct, and informative representation of the content you plan to present. The abstract communicates the essence of your presentation to the intended audience. Relevance to neuroscience nursing should be included. No images, charts, or tables are allowed.
Research session (20 minutes plus 5 minutes for questions/answers): In 250 words or less, provide an overview of your research. In narrative form, use topic headings to indicate the purpose of your research, previous pertinent research, methods and design, findings and conclusion relevant to nursing. No images, charts, or tables are allowed.
